The Hipodromo Presidente Remon racecourse is situated in the central part of Panama City and consists of a sand course with circumference 1600 metres, and an inner sand course with circumference 1400 metres. The track replaced the Juan Franco racecourse which had a poor racing surface and inadequate facilities. The course is named after General Jose Antonio Remon Cantera who was the force behind the building of the course which held its inaugural meeting on Saturday 14th July 1956. Unfortunately he was assassinated the year before and did not see his new course. The principal race is the Gran Classico Presidente de la Republique contested each June.
